YOUR BEAUTIFULLY WRAPPED GIFTS CAN HELP SAVE LIVES THIS CHRISTMAS

New technology, statement jewellery and wardrobe essentials may be the most popular presents going under the tree, but the best gift this Christmas is supporting local charity to help save lives.

Coinciding with the arrival of Santa, charity gift wrapping kicked off at Caneland Central on Saturday.

Every day until Christmas Eve, hundreds of gifts for adults and children will be wrapped by a dedicated band of volunteers who donate the proceeds to support the vital, lifesaving work of our region’s rescue helicopter.

Now in its 21st year, the gift wrapping stall, which is operated by members of ESA Alpha Rho Mackay branch and manned by volunteers, will be located in two locations, one near Target and another upstairs near Universal and JB Hi-Fi.

ESA Alpha Rho Mackay president Judy Johnson said with Black Friday sales starting early, the Mackay shopping centre had already become increasingly busy as people trawled the aisles searching for that perfect Christmas gift.

“Last year more than 9000 people visited our gift-wrapping stalls between November and December to have our volunteers wrap their gifts for a donation to charity,” Ms Johnson said.

“This resulted in the region’s rescue helicopter service receiving a record-breaking donation of $42,000 from Alpha Rho ESA Mackay.”

“This goes to show that your Christmas gifts can change lives. Come say hello to our friendly volunteers and have your presents beautifully wrapped for a donation.”

The ESA elves had been busy rostering volunteers and sourcing wrapping paper and making beautiful bows and cards throughout the year.

Since gift wrapping began 21 years ago, ESA Alpha Rho Mackay branch has donated more than $650,000 to local charity.

ESA Alpha Rho Mackay members made a record-breaking donation of $42,000 to RACQ CQ Rescue, the proceeds of the charity gift wrapping stall held at Caneland Central last year. The stall is open again this year every day until December 24.
